A Bit About Us
Working Towards a Better Tomorrow
Here at Community Counseling Center, we see the value in everyone. We want to be a catalyst for positive change, and since our beginnings in 1970 we’ve been driven by the same ideas we initially founded our Counseling Center upon: support, empowerment, and progress. Learn more about our mission, our vision, and how we go about making the changes we want to see.
The Center’s Roots
Community Counseling Center serves the entire community. Its roots run deeply in our community.
In the 1970s, a dedicated group of people from several churches recognized the need for more attentive, individual care for people suffering through life’s challenges. One founding member explained simply, “People are hurting and need help.” They recognized that many hesitated to seek mental health care because of a perceived stigma. Their founding concept was to create an extension of the church’s ministry by providing specialized counseling.
Well-trained, highly qualified counselors continue to welcome everyone in a safe, encouraging atmosphere. The Presbyterian Counseling Center, as it was known, offered counseling services to everyone in the community without regard to their financial circumstances. The Community Counseling Center continues this fundamental mission today. When individuals do not have health insurance and cannot afford the full fee, the Center works on a sliding scale based on household income. To meet the need, generous donors, churches and grants support the Center.
In 1994, the Center moved to its present location in a specially designed facility on Wrightsville Avenue. The building is comfortably maintained to invite everyone in a respectful, warm and relaxed way.
