A Bit About Us
Working Towards a Better Tomorrow
Here at the Community Counseling Center, we see the value in everyone. We want to be a catalyst for positive change, and since our beginnings in 1970, we’ve been driven by the same ideas we initially founded our Counseling Center upon support, empowerment, and progress. Learn more about our mission, vision, and how we make the changes we want to see.
The Center’s Roots
Community Counseling Center serves the entire community. Its roots run deeply in our community.
In the 1970s, a dedicated group from several churches recognized the need for more attentive, individual care for people suffering through life’s challenges. One founding member explained simply, “People are hurting and need help.” They recognized that many hesitated to seek mental health care because of a perceived stigma. Their founding concept was to create an extension of the church’s ministry by providing specialized counseling.
Well-trained, highly qualified counselors continue to welcome everyone in a safe, encouraging atmosphere. The Presbyterian Counseling Center, as it was known, offered counseling services to everyone in the community without regard to their financial circumstances. The Community Counseling Center continues this fundamental mission today. When individuals do not have health insurance and cannot afford the full fee, the Center works on a sliding scale based on household income. To meet the need, generous donors, churches, and grants support the Center.
In 1994, the Center moved to its present location in a specially designed facility on Wrightsville Avenue. The building is comfortably maintained to invite everyone in a respectful, warm, and relaxed way.
The Continuing Mission
The original vision for the Community Counseling Center continues today. Through the decades the field of psychotherapy has developed and expanded. The Center now has six therapists with a rich blend of expertise and approaches. An experienced Office Manager oversees most business aspects with the help of our Accounting and Billing Specialist. The mission remains as it always has: to offer hope and healing for all.
